Mr. Magazine, Samir Husni, reports on a speech from Texas Monthly editor Evan Smith to the Morris Communications Company. Titled “Why Content Drives Our Future as a Business”, the speech included 10 elements that matter in making a great magazine:
- Better covers
- Compelling storytelling
- Public interest journalism
- Great profiles
- Provocative essays
- The very best service journalism
- Non-traditional narratives
- Nerve
- Humor
- Self-awareness
Those are certainly all qualities you’ll find when you pick up a copy of Texas Monthly. I still fret, however, about the quality of the magazine’s website. And it’s not just putting the magazine content online, either - TM has to find a way to enable their readership to join together online. It’s not a one-way street anymore.

Emblematic of their website woes would be that I just tried viewing their current cover story, Lust in Space, and clicked “Visit our Customer Care page to get this month’s code” only to get a “Generic Error Page”.

What about The Truth? That simple dictate has been stripped from modern reportage. The media has become so enamoured with its it’s own celebrity that it has, with rare exception, all but abandoned its primary function in a democratic society .
