Mid-Sized Daily Papers at the Most Risk?

March 9th, 2007 · 1 Comment

Robert Kuttner’s story “The Race” in the latest issue of the Columbia Journalism Review (via paidContent.org) says that while the biggest newspapers and the smallest newspapers seem well positioned for a digital future, it’s the mid-sized regional metropolitan dailies that are at the most risk.

The story singles out The Philadelphia Inquirer and the Minneapolis Star Tribune as two examples, but our hometown Austin American-Statesman fits that mid-sized metropolitan daily description also.

The Statesman has made significant strides in the last year or two, but like all newspapers, they’re looking to find ways make the most of their online properties. They’re adding more multimedia content (like today’s Longhorn basketball trading cards), and are exploring more interactivity.
