Former Texas Monthly Creative Director Remakes Wired

January 23rd, 2007 · 2 Comments

The February issue of Wired features a new design, driven by Scott Dadich, who left Texas Monthly last spring to become creative director at Wired.

Wired’s new design is terrific, with an increased focus on photography and illustration, along with more readable typefaces. A note in the February issue also says the magazine has moved to a thicker, less glossy paper, which makes the magazine easier to read.

Related: Last summer, Dadich was named Designer of the Year at the National City and Regional Magazine Awards for his work at Texas Monthly.

Has anybody around here been a geek long enough to remember the first year or two of Wired, when it was truly revolutionary in both form and content? People used to complain that the articles were terrific but the typography and design made their brains hurt. Which was the point! But eventually even Time and your hometown paper discovered the Internet, and every ad agency with a hygiene product account discovered bizarre morphing typefaces, and Wired became stuck in a past where the present is still the future.

I say that but I haven’t seen a *print* copy of Wired in years. Maybe Scott has managed to reinvigorate it. If so, good for him!

I *loved* the early Wired. It has recently become just as irrelevant as Rolling Stone. The redesign is good typographically but it’s mostly done to disguise the lack of content.
