Jon Lebkowsky points to a essay by Christina Wodtke in the design site Boxes and Arrows about how the classic text The Elements of Style still exerts influence over writers and designers in the online world.
But what originally caught my eye about Jon’s post was the mention of former University of Texas journalism professor Red Gibson. Jon says that Gibson taught his copyediting class in the early 70’s, and I remember being a student of Gibson’s in the early 80’s at UT. His emphasis on the practical aspects of our work and continual emphasis on discipline and structure in writing has stuck with me for years.
