Texas Monthly Dominates City and Regional Magazine Awards

June 21st, 2006 · 2 Comments

Congratulations to Texas Monthly on winning an unprecedented 16 awards at the 21st Annual National City and Regional Magazine Awards competition this week. Texas Monthly won the top award in nine categories, including criticism, cover, excellence in writing, excellence in design, and civic journalism, along with a gold award for general excellence in its circulation category.

John Spong of Texas Monthly won Writer of the Year, while Creative Director Scott Dadich won Designer of the Year.

Los Angeles magazine, which, like Texas Monthly, is published by Emmis Communications, won 13 awards.

Dallas’ D magazine won the “Excellence Online” award. Earlier this month, I noted that the websites for the top two award-winning titles had a ways to go to catch up with their print counterparts.

When the 2006 CRMA awards were handed out, I noted that TexasMonthly.com was trailing far behind in quality to its print counterpart. Nine months later, nothing appears to have changed on that front. There is a great opportunity there for Texas Monthly to grasp, and I hope they have a good strategy to improve their online presence. [...]
