Checking in with KUT

May 26th, 2006 · 2 Comments

Last summer, Austin’s public radio station KUT hired Rich Dean as the station’s director of channels and tasked him with implementing high-definition radio technology and developing content and online services for the station. Dean, a founder of NPR.org, has been working to create new content at the station and get KUT’s digitally archived programming out to the public.

There’s still a long way to go, but Dean and company have made some nice strides in the past year. I wasn’t able to find any mention of the HD radio project on the KUT website, but I did find seven shows are available via podcast, along with about two dozen others from National Public Radio and local sources.

Howdy! Thanks for writing about us… here is the super secret scoop ;)

-We’re relaunching the web site this summer. Expect a much more community-focused approach, including one major new development. A very exciting one — you won’t be disappointed.

-HD Radio has been up and down (for the three of you with radios) this year. We have all the equipment in place, but iBiquity (the company that owns and makes the HD Radio technology) hasn’t fixed critical bugs in their system. So while we have had KUT2 running internally since January, the HD Radio technology doesn’t work reliably enough for us to talk about it on the air or on the web site just yet. Maybe in July…

There are other things in progress, but those truly are secret for now…

    Best,

    Rich
